Fantasy Football Keeper Rankings

Fantasy Football Keeper League Rankings

Fantasy football keeper rankings often look crazy to fantasy football owners who only play in redraft leagues. That’s because you’re not only trying to determine who you think will do well this year, but how many years you’ll get value out of those players. Trades in keeper leagues and dynasty leagues can be so tricky for fantasy football commissioners to evaluate for that very reason, because a rebuilding fantasy football team might take a package of players they expect to get better over the years for one big name, big productive veteran right now.

So if you’ve just come to fantasy football keeper leagues, keep in mind that the keeper rankings lists below take into account more than just 2009. You’ll probably notice in your local league that some fantasy football owners in keeper leagues take very little account of age and player growth and still try to win this year, while others will draft younger, unproven stars over the 30-year old coming off a huge season.

That’s what makes fantasy football keeper rankings so interesting, because there are different strategies and different ways to look at the dynasty players list.

Fantasy Football Quarterback Keeper Rankings

Quarterbacks are hard to figure, because a star quarterback can remain an NFL starter into their late-30′s. Still, NFL quarterbacks in their late-30′s tend to be less productive than they were five years earlier, which is why I have Tom Brady and Peyton Manning down the list a few spots.

They’re great now, but if you’re looking for keeper value, you probably still want guys like Aaron Rodgers and Philip Rivers, who might post numbers just as good, but have an additional 7-8 years of NFL play left in their careers.

Fantasy Football Running Back Keeper Rankings

The running back aren’t quite so mixed up as the quarterbacks are. That’s because runners tend to burn out quick anyway, so most of the top RBs will stay at the top of the running back keepers list until the year they drop off the map.

I’ve tried to anticipate when a sharp production dropoff will come, though, such as with Michael Turner – whom many people believe won’t recover from his 370+ carries last year in time to match the same production in 2009.

1. Adrian Peterson, RB, Minnesota Vikings – Age: 24

Fantasy Football Wide Receiver Keeper Rankings

With wide receivers, I’ve tried to place receivers at the top of the ratings list who should be in a good situation for years to come: like Greg Jennings, who has a 25 year old star quarterback throwing to him in Aaron Rodgers.

A receiver like Calvin Johnson, who might take a hit in his numbers in 2009 due to a rookie quarterback, should still remain strong for years, as his QB begins to mature.

Fantasy Football Tight End Keeper Rankings

Several of the best and most productive tight ends are on the wrong side of 30, or they’re close to it, so I’ve tried to place tight ends higher whom I anticipate having many more years of production.

If you have an older tight end like Tony Gonzales, Antonio Gates or Dallas Clark, consider drafting a young stud like Jared Cook or Jermichael Finley – or John Carlson if you’re completely lucky – to eventually replace them in two to three years.

1. Jason Witten, TE, Dallas Cowboys – Age: 27
2. Greg Olsen, TE, Chicago Bears – Age: 24
3. Antonio Gates, TE, San Diego Chargers – Age: 29
4. Dallas Clark, TE, Indianapolis Colts – Age: 30
5. John Carlson, TE, Seattle Seahawks – Age: 25
6. Tony Gonzalez, TE, Atlanta Falcons – Age: 33
7. Chris Cooley, TE, Washington Redskins – Age: 27
8. Kellen Winslow, TE, Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Age: 26
