Fantasy Sports Live Journal Week 5
NFL Week 5
Last week, I took a little vacation time, so I didn’t make any picks over at Fantasy Sports Live. Let’s hope that didn’t stop my momentum, because I started the season with a couple of nice weeks. But Week 4 was the first week of byes, with traditional powerhouses like the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots of, so maybe it was for the best.
The week before, in Week 3, I entered three contests and looked to further increase my bankroll. How did I do? Read on.
Fantasy Sports Live – Week 3 Results
During the third week of the NFL season, I entered my customary three fantasy contests. I had really been on a roll for the first few weeks, and my bankroll had increased nicely over its starting amount. Therefore, in addition to the usual $1 to $11 contests, I decided to mix in a $33 heads-up game.
Unfortunately, I lost every contest coming out of week three. I grabbed Brandon Jacobs in a couple of them, and he didn’t do much at all for me (although Larry Johnson was certainly a nice surprise). But that’s just the way it goes in the world of fantasy football.
The good news is that I’m still over my initial bankroll of $500. Prior to entering any contests this week, I’m sitting at $506.10. Considering my losses last time, I may be a bit more conservative this week when it comes to choosing my entry fees.
Fantasy Sports Live – Week 5 Contests
As always, I’m entering three different contests on Fantasy Sports Live. I always take part in the Blogger Battle, and I also like the odds that the head-to-head games give me.
After reading this, be sure to head over to Fantasy Sports Live and see if any of the contests I’m participating in are still open. I’d love to compete against you (and take a little of your money while I’m at it).
Contest #1 (25915)
10-player contest with 1st place paying $5 – Entry fee is $1
1000 point salary cap
- QB – Peyton Manning – Colts (142 points)
- WR – Brandon Marshall – Broncos (180 points)
- WR – Reggie Wayne – Colts (124 points)
- WR – Larry Fitzgerald – Cardinals (134 points)
- RB – Correll Buck halter – Eagles (79 points)
- RB – Ladainian Tomlinson – Chargers (149 points)
- TE – Tony Gonzalez – Chiefs (74 points)
- K – Neil Rackers – Cardinals (59 points)
- DEF – Chargers (53 points)
Total Cap Cost = 994 points (6 remaining)
Quarterback – Coming off a bye, Manning has had a chance to rest and get ready for the rest of the season. While the Colts have struggled offensively so far, I’m betting this is the week where things start clicking again. They’re playing the Texans, by the way.
Wide Receivers – Marshall, Wayne and Fitzgerald make up a formidable receiver trio. Marshall continues to be the most targeted player in the league, while Fitzgerald should see more looks with Boldin being out. Wayne has been great every week, but improvement to the Colts offense should make him even better.
Running Backs – The Dolphins aren’t as good as their win over the Patriots would indicate, and LT2 is gonna run all over them. Bryan Westbrook is a game-time decision, and I’m counting on Buckhalter to get the start. The Redskins defense won’t be easy to overcome, but Buckhalter seems to have a knack for getting into the end zone.
Tight End – I started to take Witten, but I went with the cheaper option in Gonzalez. While the Chiefs can struggle on offense, Gonzalez has been a reliable weapon for the team for years. I see no reason why that should change this Sunday.
Kicker – The Cardinals are a high-powered offense, but this week they’ll be going against the undefeated Bills. They’ll also be without receiver Anquan Boldin, and that might limit their ability to drive down the field from time to time. I’m counting on this translating into extra opportunities for Rackers.
Defense – I know the Dolphins embarrassed the Patriots, but how many times can Ronnie Brown be counted on to score five touchdowns? Not very many, I think. Even without linebacker Shawn Merriman, I’m betting that the Chargers defense will give Pennington and company fits.

Contest #2 (25880)
Heads-Up contest with first place paying $6 – Entry fee is $3.4
No salary cap
- QB – Peyton Manning – Colts
- WR – Larry Fitzgerald – Cardinals
- WR – Terrell Owens – Cowboys
- WR – Reggie Wayne – Colts
- RB – Matt Forte – Bears
- RB – Ladainian Tomlinson – Chargers
- TE – Jason Witten – Cowboys
- K – Matt Prater – Broncos
- DEF – Chicago Bears
Quarterback – The Texans should be overwhelmed by the firepower of the Colts, and their strong safety will be out for the game. Expect Manning to get everyone involved, and the return of Dallas Clark will give him even more options.
Wide Receivers – Fitzgerald, Wayne and Owens are all threats to catch one or more touchdowns per game. It also doesn’t hurt that two of the teams being played are the Texans and Bengals. While Fitzgerald draws the Bills, they’re going to be missing one of their starting cornerbacks. I’ll take these three guys every week of the year.
Running Backs – Tomlinson has had 51 touches over the last 2 games, so I’m confident that his toe is fine. Forte is taking on a Lions defense which ranks last in rushing yardage allowed.
Tight End – Witten is simply the best tight end in the game right now, and Romo loves to get the ball into his hands. Unless Witten starts sleeping with Jessica Simpson, I expect this trend to continue.
Kicker - The Broncos offense has been on fire, and Prater has benefited all season. I don’t expect that to change this week.
Defense – Defensive units have scored twice against the Lions this year, and they’re allowing an average of 3 sacks and 2 turnovers per game. That’s good news for the Bears.
Contest #3 (25775)
Blogger Battle – 10 teams – 1st place pays $50 – Entry fee is $11
950 point salary cap
- QB – Peyton Manning – Colts (142 points)
- WR – Larry Fitzgerald – Cardinals (134 points)
- WR – Terrell Owens – Cowboys (126 points)
- WR – Reggie Wayne – Colts (124 points)
- RB – Matt Forte – Bears (154 points)
- RB – Ladainian Tomlinson – Chargers (149 points)
- TE – Dallas Clark – Colts (28 points)
- K – Matt Stover – Ravens (30 points)
- DEF – Dallas Cowboys (49 points)
Total cap cost = 936 (14 points remaining)
Quarterback – Manning has been as good as gold for years. He’s had a bumpy start this season, but the bye week was just what he and his teammates needed. It’s time for the Colts of old to make their return.
Wide Receivers – In my mind, I couldn’t have selected a better group of receivers this week. And I was even able to fit them under the cap. Hooray!
Running Backs – Through four games, Forte is leading the league with 100 touches. That might not bode well for later in the season, but I only need him to be good this week (that’s the beauty of Fantasy Sports Live). In his last two games, Tomlinson has scored four touchdowns. He’s heating up, and I see no reason to believe that Miami will slow him down.
Tight End – Dallas Clark returns to reap the benefits of playing with Peyton Manning. While he came incredibly cheap at 28 points, he’s worth way more than that.
Kicker – Assuming the Ravens score at all against the tough Titans, I’m betting the majority of it will be field goals.
Defense – Ryan Fitzpatrick will likely start for the Bengals, and the Cowboys will beat him like a drum. Expect more than one turnover and several sacks. Marvin Lewis will be lucky to make it to the end of the season with his job intact.
