At the end of last week, I was down below my starting bankroll of $500 for the first time.
When I checked Fantasy Sports Live after the Week 5 games, I noticed I was back up to $516.70.
That means I placed in the money on at least one of the contests I entered, so let’s take a look and see exactly how I fared.
Contest #1 (25915)
10-player contest – Entry fee is $1
1000 point salary cap
Brandon Marshall had been kicking ass up until this week, but he only pulled down enough receptions for a measly 2.5 points. I also thought Correll Buckhalter would start over the injured Brian Westbrook, but the Eagles’ halfback toughed it out and played (adding a couple of fractured ribs to his list of ailments). Tomlinson was also a killer, getting me only 5.7 points. In the end, I ended up finishing 9th out of 10 teams. At least I wasn’t dead last.
Contest #2 (25880)
Heads-Up contest- Entry fee is $3.4
No salary cap
I took first place in this head-to-head competition, walloping my opponent by a score of 134 to 98. Despite Tomlinson’s disappointing game, every other player on the roster came through for me. Forte continued to lead the Rookie of the Year competition, and my receiving corps combined for 46.4 points. It also didn’t hurt that Peyton Manning finally showed signs of life. I picked up $6 for the win, by the way.
Contest #3 (25775)
Blogger Battle – 10 teams – Entry fee is $11
950 point salary cap
While I didn’t win this contest, I still finished in the money with third place and received $20.
My receivers performed exactly how I had hoped they would, and the Cowboys defense even chipped in seven points (not bad considering how many points they’ve been giving up this season). The Bears continue to find new ways to get the ball into Matt Forte’s hands, and the stud runner is now contributing nicely in the passing game.

But enough bragging about last week, because now it’s a whole new ballgame. It doesn’t matter what a player did last week, as Fantasy Sports Live is all about “what have you done for me lately”? I’m going with my usual three contests, and let’s hope I can stack a few new bills on top of my bankroll.
Blogger Battle
10-player contest with 1st place paying $50 – Entry fee is $11
950 point salary cap
Total Cap Cost = 937
Remaining Points = 13
Quarterback – I can’t imagine that the Cowboys/Cardinals game will be anything other than a shootout. Warner may be without Anquan Boldin, but that won’t slow him down. As long as he stays upright, I expect Warner to put up strong numbers.
Wide Receivers – Fitzgerald and Owens will both be heavily involved in the aforementioned Cowboys/Cardinals game. To top off my receiving corps, I added T.J. Whosyourmomma. Chad Johnson still draws the heavy coverage, and T.J. exploits this on a regular basis. As long as Carson Palmer is healthy, Houshmandzadeh has an opportunity for a huge day.
Running Backs – After fracturing two ribs (to go along with the fractured ankle), I’m pretty confident that Brian Westbrook will sit out this week (especially with a bye around the corner). Buckhalter has proven that he can handle the duties just fine, and he’s always had a nose for the end zone. Adrian Peterson, on the other hand, is long overdue for a monster game. Against the hapless Lions, he’ll finally get it.
Tight End -Since there’s a salary cap involved, I had to save some points somewhere. Smith is a reliable target who gets plenty of looks from Donovan McNabb. He’s a risk to get hurt, but I couldn’t pass up the bargain.
Kicker – Stover was one of the cheapest kickers available, so why not? The Ravens offense is slowly improving with Joe Flacco, and that might be good enough to get him a few field goal opportunities.
Defense – The Lions travel to Minnesota. The Vikings are coming off a big win, while the Lions have had the wind completely knocked out of them. Can anybody say momentum?
6-player contest with 1st place paying $40 – Entry fee is $11
No salary cap
Quarterback – Brees has been a monster this season, and I don’t foresee the Raiders slowing him down. He’s got plenty of targets, including the always-dangerous Reggie Bush. Just imagine what Brees will be like when Marques Colston comes back from his injury
Wide Receivers – Jennings, Marshall and Fitzgerald have all been on fire this season, and all three men know how to find the endzone. Marshall is constantly targeted by Jay Cutler, and Jennings has surpassed Donald Driver as the primary target in the Packers’ offense.
Running Backs – Since there’s no salary cap, I’m adding Frank Gore to go along with Adrian Peterson. Gore can get it done rushing or receiving, and he’s just too good to pass up.
Tight End – Jason Witten is the #1 tight end in the league. ‘Nuff said.
Kicker - The Broncos know how to move the ball, and that often ends up benefiting Prater. He’s the top fantasy football kicker in one of my leagues, and that’s good enough to make him my selection in the contest without a salary cap.
Defense – Once again, it’s the Vikings.
10-player contest with 1st place paying $5 – Entry fee is $1
1000 point salary cap
Total Cap Cost = 997
Points left = 3
Quarterback – If Kurt Warner is going to have a big day, then why not Tony Romo? When he’s not playing tonsil hockey with Jessica Simpson, the kid can play some pretty good football. And it’s not like the Cardinals defense is impenetrable.
Wide Receivers – Marshall is still in the mix, despite his poor performance last week. Wayne is as solid as they come, especially with Peyton Manning starting to come on. Moss is up or down, but his cheap price tag convinced me to take a chance on him.
Running Backs – Correll Buckhalter and Adrian Peterson….again. Hope this duo works out, or I’m going to be screwed in two different contests.
Tight End – Even though he’s banged up, Gates is still one of the best tight ends in the league. Plus, he was quite a bit cheaper than Jason Witten.
Kicker – Vinatieri is going up against the Ravens defense, so the Colts may be forced to go for three on a number of occasions. If Reggie Wayne isn’t getting the points, then I’m expecting Vinatieri to benefit.
Defense – I’m once again going with the Vikings. I just can’t pass over that match-up with the Lions and their rookie or back-up quarterback.
That’s it for this week. If you’re able, be sure and check out Fantasy Sports Live for dozens of weekly football contests. You might even take a look and see if there are any open spots in my contests. I’d love to compete against you!
And for those of you scoring at home, my bankroll is now
$493.70 after paying this week’s entry fees. Here’s hoping it’s $588.70 when Monday rolls around.
