New Orleans Saints Running Backs 2009

New Orleans Saints Running Back by Committee

Watch out if you’re drafting in fantasy drafts this weekend. The New Orleans Saints appear to be headed towards a true “running back by committee” this year. One Saints beat writer has written that the Saints actually intend on using not only Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush in their backfield this year – but also Mike Bell. Yes, that Mike Bell, of Denver Broncos and Houston Texans fame (if you want to call it that).

Reggie Bush’s Injury Problem

With the inability of Reggie Bush to stay healthy throughout any of his three years in the NFL, it’s no wonder that the Saints coaching staff is exploring other options. Mike Bell seems to have come out of fantasy nowhere, but Bell has been productive in preseason games and impressed coaches in training camp. Mike Bell seemed to show some talent with the Broncos all those years ago, but he couldn’t stay healthy enough to capitalize on his chances. Now, Mike Bell will be mixed in to help spell Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush.

This is killer fantasy news for anyone who has drafted Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush so far this summer. While Mike Bell probably won’t take enough carries to be a fantasy football option himself, he might take just enough touches to put a dent in the production of Thomas and Bush – who already were going to be stealing production from each other.

Lance Moore Fantasy Football News

Lance Moore looked good in his preseason debut as the Saints #2 wide receiver. Of course, everybody looks good against the Oakland Raiders Defense, so take that news with a grain of salt. The fact Lance Moore was on the field and looking ready to go is what fantasy owners wanted to hear, though, after Moore hurt his shoulder in O.T.A.’s and had to have surgery. Lance Moore’s 2008 breakout season with the always-throwing Saints passing attack makes Moore a fantasy factor, so it was disappointing to see him go down with an injury in the offseason.

But Lance Moore caught several balls from Drew Brees, along with a 5-yard touchdown pass. Expect Lance Moore to be one of the Saints main big-play options, along with Devery Henderson, who also caught a touchdown from Drew Brees. The only difference is that Lance Moore works the underneath routes as the flanker, while Devery Henderson will be more sporadic in his production as the Saints #3 receiver. Given that Drew Brees likes to spread the ball around, no one New Orleans Saints receiver will have overwhelming production, but it’s not a bad thing to have a part of the New Orleans Saints passing game in 2009.

Bump Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush Down

Given the developing RBBC with Pierre Thomas, Reggie Bush and Mike Bell, I would suggest avoiding Saints runners and drafting any Saints runners that slide in the draft. Colston is going in the 3rd round of drafts this year, but Lance Moore seems to have fallen as late as the 7th and 8th rounds in drafts with owners who still think he’s an injury liability. Grab Lance Moore if he falls below the 6th round in 12-team leagues.
